Jakarta International Container Terminal

Jakarta International Container Terminal is the largest container terminal in Indonesia, and one of the busiest and fastest growing container terminals in the world. Formed in 1999, Jakarta International Container Terminal operates Terminals 1 and 2 at the Tanjung Priok Seaport located in West Java, Indonesia. It currently covers one hundred hectares of land, and is developing more than twenty-nine more hectares for future use. Jakarta International Container Terminal provides service to over twenty shipping lines, has direct routes to twenty-five countries and is open twenty-four hours a day, all year round.

The Jakarta International Container Terminal itself consists of two terminals. Each terminal has two main sections: the berth and the container yard. Terminal 1 is by far the largest of the two terminals, at over three times the size of Terminal 2. Terminal 1 has a berth 1690 meters in length by 26.5-34.9 meters in width, and a container yard with a total area of 36.9 hectares. The berth at Terminal 2 measures 510 meters in length by 16 meters in width, which its container yard has an area of 9.24 hectares. Furthermore, the Jakarta International Container Terminal is equipped with multiple units each of quay crane containers, rubber tyred gantry cranes, head trucks, chassis/trailers, spreaders for QCC, spreaders for RTGC and over high frames. This means that the Jakarta International Container terminal is well-equipped to handle the worlds largest shipping companies.

In February of 2011, Jakarta International Container Terminal announced plans to implement an Auto Gate System in their Tangung Priok port. Their hope is that this new system will streamline transactions at the gate, allowing for a greater ease and speed of container movement and accelerated trade, resulting in positive effects on the Indonesian economy. The system is intended to go live in 2012 and will affect a total of twenty gates at the Jakarta International Container Terminal.

As well as economic growth, Jakarta International Container Terminal has shown itself to be committed to socially and environmentally conscious practices. In 2011. Jakarta International Container Terminal added twenty rubber tyred gantry cranes to their list of equipment. These cranes are extremely accurate and can stack containers much higher than other cranes, allowing Jakarta International Container Terminal to use less space and subsequently reduce their economic footprint. They have also undertaken projects such as the Clean River Program of Lagoa Kanal and educational programs for youth, which show that Jakarta International Container Terminal truly is a forward-thinking company.
